At first glance, a little green growth in a pond might not seem like a big deal. A few weeds near the edge. A little vegetation under the surface. Maybe some floating mats that look annoying but harmless.
Then, before you know it, the pond you used to fish, paddle, look at, or manage has turned into a thick, tangled mess.
Hydrilla is one of the most aggressive aquatic weeds found in ponds, lakes, canals, and retention areas. It grows fast, spreads easily, and can take over a body of water before most property owners realize what’s happening. Once it’s established, it’s not something you can just rake out on a Saturday and call it done. Hydrilla is stubborn. Really stubborn. And that’s exactly why it needs to be handled the right way.
What Is Hydrilla?
Hydrilla is a submerged aquatic plant, which means it grows mostly underwater. It has long, branching stems with small pointed leaves that grow in whorls around the stem. As it grows, it reaches upward toward the sunlight and can form thick mats at the surface.
Those mats are the part most people notice first.
They can make the pond look neglected, block access to the water, clog drainage areas, interfere with fishing, and make boating or maintenance nearly impossible. But the real problem is not just what you see on top.
